Fant Memorial Library – Mississippi University for Women

The Fant Memorial Library project involved the renovation and expansion of the two-story, 62,000 SF building providing additional space for meeting and classroom facilities, a multi-media lab/instructional center, and faculty and commons areas, including a cafe. Originally built in 1969, improvements are being made to the facility to meet the technological requirements of twenty-first century libraries: twenty-four-hour study rooms, archival processing, media listening/viewing rooms, special collection rooms, exhibit areas, and an automated storage and retrieval system.

This project required significant coordination and phasing of construction activities to allow for continuous operation of the library, including erection of temporary partitions, operation of temporary HVAC equipment, and the relocation of equipment and services as needed throughout the course of construction.

As a part of the third-phase renovation, a small VRF system was installed as a back-up conditioning system for the archive and book repository sections of the library. This VRF system activates when the main variable air volume air handling units are unable to maintain room temperature in the spaces where the VRF units are installed. This VRF system utilizes branch circuit controllers to allow for simultaneous heating and cooling amount from the units on the controller.
