North Charleston Elementary School

North Charleston Elementary School is a neighborhood school that prides itself on the success of its students. Educators have the honor of serving over 560 students in this community. To replace the original school, built in 1922, the school district wanted to design a totally new facility built to LEED specifications that would enhance the work of both students and teachers. Located in North Charleston, South Carolina, this public elementary school includes classrooms, library, multi-purpose room, full-service cafeteria/auditorium, and a playground.

CxGBS applied our Holistic Commissioning process on the project, focusing on the building enclosure, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. The school was the first to achieve a Silver certification.  As the first LEED-certified elementary school in the state of South Carolina, this award-winning project features a water recover system, ice storage system for cooling, day-light harvesting techniques, environmentally friendly materials, and energy efficient systems.

Added Value through CxGBS® Services:

• CxGBS identified a problem with the demand-based ventilation and helped the designer to correct the problem in order to improve efficiency.
• CxGBS diagnosed a contractor error with iStorage and helped the contractor to correct the problem.
• The building also conserves energy and water resources through native and adaptive landscaping, water efficient plumbing and high efficiency building systems.
• Materials were selected for their recycled content, rapid renewability, low volatile chemical content, and long life expectancy.
• The facility is the state’s first LEED® certified elementary school, achieving Silver.
