C. F. Haynsworth Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse

The C. F. Haynsworth Federal Building/Courthouse is significant because of its representation of a specific period of federal architecture and because it is a symbol of the federal presence in Greenville. Built in 1937, the four-story, 88,000 SF historic C. F. Haynsworth Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse has undergone more than seven renovations during the building’s life thus far.

Renovations, even if for minor space alterations, often affect the performance of the building’s mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. CxGBS was tasked with investigating and providing recommendations for optimizing building performance through identifying energy efficiency improvements and demand reduction strategies, indoor air quality and occupant comfort improvements, and operational improvements.

For the Haynsworth building, CxGBS provided the GSA with ASHRAE level I, II, and III energy audits and retro-commissioning planning and investigation services.

Added value through CxGBS® services:

• Results of the energy audit and retro-commissioning process provided information used to develop low or no cost improvements. Implementation of these improvements provided options to improve building performance without capital improvements.
• Results of the energy audit and retro-commissioning investigation also informed energy conservation measures which required capital expenditures. These ECMs were prioritized using cost benefit analysis and presented to the GSA for review and implementation.
