Georgia Southern Recreation Activity Center

The Georgia Southern University Recreation Activity Center is recognized as one of the top projects in Carolinas/Georgia. With a growing student population, GSU sought to meet the recreation and fitness needs of the entire university community. Overcrowding of the existing facility and loss of previous recreation spaces required new and expanded spaces to enhance the wellness component of the university’s student-centered mission.

Georgia Southern University (GSU), founded in 1906 as a district agricultural school has morphed into a regional university that draws 16,000 students from every state and eighty-six nations. The new Recreation Activity Center nearly doubled the original facility, adding ten new indoor multipurpose indoor courts and five new racquetball courts, a 23,000 SF fitness center, weight/fitness rooms, and indoor eleven-lane competition pool and diving well.

Added value through CxGBS® services:

  • Storm water capture and treatment for landscape irrigation and removal of 80 percent total suspended solids and 40 percent phosphates
  • 30 percent more energy efficient than minimum requirements
  • Natural daylighting was incorporated, minimizing the need for artificial electrical lighting
  • Local and regionally manufactured and harvested construction materials
  • Improved indoor air quality through the use of low and no volatile organic compound-containing materials in construction and finishes
  • CxGBS’s green housekeeping and site management programs were implemented upon completion of the building project.
