Mississippi School for the Blind and Deaf – Dorms A & B

The state of Mississippi has been providing education to deaf children since 1829. Mississippi School for the Deaf was established by an act of the Mississippi Legislature in 1854 for the express purpose of providing an educational program for children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

The first project was a renovation of an existing single-story 8,700 SF residence hall housing elementary aged children at the Mississippi School for the Blind and Deaf. The original plan was to only renovate the interior, but mold and mildew was found in the exterior wall assemblies when removing the sheetrock.

The second project was a renovation of an existing single-story 10,500 SF residence hall. The HVAC systems consisted of Fan Coil Units throughout the building with a dedicated outdoor air unit for ventilation.

CxGBS provided Holistic Commissioning® services which included design, construction, and warranty phase commissioning for the MEP and building enclosure systems. We played an integral part in the rebuilding of the exterior wall all the way around the building down to the slab and steel.

“This project involved a major renovation of a dormitory on the campus of the Mississippi School for The Blind and Deaf in Jackson, Mississippi. The project had a weak architect and a non-cooperative contractor. CxGBS worked through the difficulties with the Bureau of Building resulting in a project that was successful. This was one of the first projects to be commissioned, and CxGBS was instrumental in helping make the change in culture for the construction industry in Mississippi.” —Rick Snowden, MS Department of Finance & Administration Deputy Executive Director (retired)
